Rembrandt van Rijn

(1606–69)
   Artist.
Rembrandt was born in Leyden, Holland. He achieved early fame as a portrait painter and he moved to Amsterdam in 1631. In the history of Christian art, he is remembered for his dark paintings, from which the figures glow with an extraordinary inner light. He frequently treated biblical themes and altogether he produced ninety versions of the Passion stories in paintings and etchings. Although he fell out with the Dutch Church after fathering an illegitimate child, Rembrandt has long been recognised as a profoundly religious painter and he has been described as the ‘artist of the soul’.
